TL;DR: I'm running a weekly newsletter with 5 songs and a short description, and a matching Spotify playlist if you want to subscribe.
For the non-Spotify readers, there is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover.
Hello everyone!
Week 50 already. London is still snow-white, France is playing a big football game later in the afternoon, and I wanted to play some Devin Townsend songs for this week's playlist.
I discovered Devin Townsend in 1999 with the album Ocean Machine. I could not find a way to get a hand on any of his albums, so I waited for an hour in my university computer lab to download a single MP3 file. One of my first encounters with the Internet :-)
This song ended up being a gateway to many of the heavy metal bands I've been listening to since then.
Devin's Canadian, so I'm focusing on Canada today.
Devin Townsend - Life
Life is from one of the early albums of the British Columbia-based heavy metal maestro. Life is from his Ocean Machine album, released in 1997, bringing a more upbeat - light-on-its-feet - poppy songwriting to his massive yet not overwhelming wall of sound.
Venetian Snares - Hajnal
Aaron Funk, aka Venetian Snares, is one of Canada's finest electronic / break-core with a song from an album inspired by Funk's recent Hungary trip that combines fast breakbeats with classical strings and trumpets,
Patrick Watson - Lighthouse
One of the opening tracks of the prodigal son of Arcade Fire
Godspeed You Black Emperor - Job's Lament
This is another influential band in my musical journey. GYBE comes from Montreal, with a maverick approach, on and off stage. They create epic, repetition-oriented chamber post-rock, resulting in a meditative and hypnotic loop. A kind of perfect soundtrack to a society on the edge of all-out war, of the push-and-pull between total doom and inextinguishable hope for something better.
Leonard Cohen - Dance Me to the End of Love
Let's end this week's playlist with a classic from the spiritual father of the Canadian music scene.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
