This Week's Playlist #79 - Guest feature: Jack F
The goal keeper of my local football club is curating this week's playlist :football:
Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 2, episode 27.
A slight change for this week.
My other hobby, besides collecting nerdy music records and writing a weekly music newsletter, is supporting a local fan-owned football team, including shooting photos of games and helping with admin work here and there.
I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to invite some of the members of this football club.
The first guest of a (hopefully long) series: Let me introduce you to Jack, goalkeeper and captain of the men's first team and assistant manager of the women's first team.
Enjoy, and see you next week.
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
Tidal (coming soon)
Deezer (coming soon)
Guest of the week: Jack F
I know Thomas as he is member, fan and part owner of a local football club which I play for.
Weekly post match celebrations in the clubhouse usually involve a plethora of punk rock/metal which may or may not be referenced in my song picks.
Outside of football, my professional background is in media/advertising which allows for a lot of stressful moments in which I reach for my headphones, (the sensible option rather than reaching for a beer at 10am) and plug into something to take my mind off the corporate world; or I listen to something rebellious to antagonise me and make me feel alive just in time for the next boring teams meeting.
I think my list reflects my diverse upbringing and background, as well as my personality with lots of different influences and a refusal to be pigeonholed into a certain type of taste.
Very hard to chose 5 songs, and this changes almost weekly, but thank you Thomas for asking!
Links:
1. The Strokes - Selfless
My all-time favourite band, it would be far too easy to pick classics such as Reptilia, Last Nite or 12:51. I've picked Selfless despite being on the latest album, The New Abnormal (recorded in lockdown); it's an instant classic in my opinion, due to the vintage Strokes style guitar riff and range of vocals from Julian Casablancas.
2. The Clash - Train in Vain
The best punk band of all time. I love this song as it shows that Mick Jones can be just as expressive on vocals as Joe Strummer. Probably the best use of a piano in a punk song as well. I can tell you that this is also an incredibly cathartic song to listen to while going through a break-up as well, trust me...
3. Damian Marley ft Skrillex - Make It Bun Dem
Nothing like a bit of Reggaestep to get you going before playing a game of football. This is regularly high up on my match-day playlist and always gets me in the mood for an explosion of energy.
4. Burro Banton - Badder dan dem
Dancehall is a favourite genre of mine, and Burro is one of the all-time greats, boasting in this song that he's still the baddest, proving his longevity by telling us all that he was writing classics when other legends of the game like Beenie Man and Bounty Killer were just children. I definitely wouldn't argue. I challenge anyone to listen to this one and stay still.
5. Thin Lizzy - Sarah
After all that jumping around, we might need to calm down, so my final pick is a song that is a testament to the genius of Phil Lynott. Toning down the metal vibes to pen this song, I guess you would classify it as a pop? There's still an incredible guitar solo squeezed in there, as well as being extremely catchy.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
