1. Beth Ditto - Born This Way
I had to start with Lady Gaga’s unapologetic banger. Or rather, a cover by another LGBTQ punk icon Beth Ditto.
2. Electric Six - Gay Bar
Another banger from the Detroit dance-rock outfit’s 2003 debut album (‘Fire’). ‘Gay Bar’ is infectious nonsense. But its hand-clappy, surf-rock vibe is good fun.
3. Perfume Genius - Queen
The Seattle singer-songwriter has been writing fragile & melancholy songs, and he has spoken about his experiences with gender and sexuality in his music and interviews.
4. Queen - I Want To Break Free
I could not make a Pride playlist without this classic emancipation song about yearning for freedom and independence. As a bonus, the video shows the entire band in drag!
5. George Michael - Freedom 90 (unplugged)
Finishing this week's selection with a classic from George Michael. I enjoy his repertoire's live renditions, which always transcend the original recordings.
