This Week's Playlist #65 - Guest feature: Oli / W-Fenec
5+1 picks from the editor-in-chief of a French rock online magazine
Hello everyone!
This Week’s Playlist - Season 2, episode 13.
Today’s playlist is brought by the editor-in-chief of one of W-Fenec, one of the first French musical webzines, back in the late 90s, still active today. I owe them a lot of my musical education and tastes of that time.
Its name is a play on words, as "Fenec" is a reference to the Fennec fox, a small desert animal known for its big ears and quick movements, while "W" stands for "web."
Get ready for a very loud, slow and heavy rotation this week.
See you next week.
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:

Guest of the week: Oli W-Fenec
I am a co-founder and editor-in-chief of W-Fenec, a rock webzine turned magazine that just celebrated its 25th year of activity! I grew up with rock from the 70s, and as a teenager in the 90s, I loved grunge, skatecore, and alternative music. Over time, I also appreciated other genres like post-rock, metal, and industrial. Today, I listen to everything, and among my favourite bands, you'll find Tool, Mass Hysteria, and Pink Floyd. In addition, 25 years of album reviews have allowed me to broaden my horizons and make many new connections. I could have filled this list with only bands I consider "friends." Still, I've prepared a small selection of tracks that take me on a journey without resorting to favouritism!
So, get comfortable, grab some headphones, turn off your phone, start the playlist, and close your eyes!

LOST IN KIEV – Solastalgia
A Parisian band that offers a very bright instrumental metal, it's as thoughtful as it is beautiful, and you can listen to it endlessly.
KLONE - Within Reach
Klone has softened their tone and channelled their anger for their last few albums. As a result, I get goosebumps and chills down my spine when I hear their attacks. The power emitted by their music is becoming increasingly impressive.
DELIVERANCE – Odyssey
Deliverance doesn't sound like any other band, they mix a bunch of influences to make their own thing. And while I already liked them a lot, they totally won me over with "Odyssey," whose intro sounds a lot like the "four notes" from "Shine on you crazy diamond," my favourite track on my favourite album by my favourite band. The rest of the song is very prog and then turns into metal, and I love this blend of styles.
PSYCHONAUT - Violate Consensus Reality
This Belgian post-hardcore band is in the vein of Cult of Luna or Moanaa, and their latest album is stunning. The band is strong when the technique is put at the service of atmosphere, and you go from one feeling to another within the same track. Psychonaut is very strong.
HYPNO5E - Slow Steams of Darkness
Let's finish on a high note with one of the most stunning bands in this genre, Hypno5e. They master sounds, rhythms, and arrangements, and every time it's a demonstration of pure talent. They've had a flawless career for over 10 years. Impressive.
Bonus: PILLORY – Murderer
Nota Bene: This title is a bit outside the scope of "post-metal," but this band I discovered in 2022 totally blew my mind. How can they be so chaotic and brutal yet make the listener want to return for more?
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
