This Week's Playlist #126 - The Brother edition, vol. 3
My brother picks up 5 songs of his current favorite songs
Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 3, Episode 22.
My little brother, a regular of this newsletter, is coming back in 2024 with some of his current picks. Very diverse (and yet very nerdy) selection.
I hope yo enjoy and see you next week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
1. Cha Wa – My People
A Mardi Gras Indian crazy band producing some of the best funk in Louisiana. I highly recommend
checking out some of their videos because their costumes are stunning (at least the lead singer’s), it’s even more impressive when you know it’s all hand made!
2. Chilly Gonzales – Knight Moves
The self proclaimed musical genius, is one of the most exciting and versatile current piano players. He is probably much less virtuoso than someone like Tigran Hamasyan but he makes up for it with his showman skills and his smart way of breaking down music and explaining it to the audience.
I really enjoy watching his masterclass videos on youtube, for instance his jazzy version of Dance Monkey sounds almost better than the original one! His discography is super extensive and varied, with solo albums, music chamber, collaborations with rappers or full orchestra.
I chose Knight Moves which is kinda like chill upbeat? At this point I’m just throwing keywords in to pick your interest!
3. Lucio Bukowski – Pinacle
Sorry to all the non-French speakers, but I recently discovered this French rapper. I love his chill backing music and his smart-ass texts.
This particular track got me with its niche references to old school French freesoloists Alain Robert (the French spiderman) and Patrick Edlinger (and his documentary La Vie au bout des doigts).
4. Sous le Charme – Esperanto
A recently formed French accordion-saxophone duo, who create lovely instrumental music.
Julien Dub (sax) is Paris-based and Miguel Gramontain is an accordion maker in Ariège in the south of France. They randomly met on the road and the result is this first EP! It’s a slightly unusual mix of instruments but I find that they do a great job at unifying the two.
5. Les Cowboys Fringants – La fin du show
The emblematic band from Quebec. Les Cowboys Fringants are one of the most famous and successful music bands from the province, notably for their strong texts in favour of Quebec’s independence or environmental protection. They’ve been producing “néo-trad” music for the past three decades (fancy word to describe some sort of modern folk/rock/country originating from Quebec).
Sadly the lead singer passed away last November after a long fight against prostate cancer. Still, he managed to record this last song a couple of weeks before he died.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
