This Week's Playlist #122 - The Spring Bank Holiday 2024 edition
I'm picking up 5 songs for a 3-day weekend.
Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 3, Episode 18.
No guest and no topical edition. Back to an old-school 5 tracks newsletter. It’s a 3-day weekend in London and a surprisingly nice sun after a couple of weeks of dire (what-a-surprise) weather.
So a perfect opportunity to wrap up 5 songs I’ve been listening to in the last 2 months. No specific order or topic.
See you next week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
1. Soundgarden - 4th of July
I'm a 90s grunge music teenager, but it took me a while to get into Soundgarden (until the first Audioslave record in 2003).
I rediscovered Superunknown not too long ago. Here is "4th of July" with the recognizablely heavy opening riff and Chris Cornell's (may he rest in peace) voice.
2. Thundercat - Them Changes
Another classic I'm discovering 7 years late.
Stephen Lee Bruner is the jazz/funk maestro mixing jazz, funk soul and electronic music for his brilliant 3rd album.
3. Elliott Smith - Needle In The Hay
I've always loved Elliott Smith but mainly listened to his 2 cornerstone albums, Either/Or and Figure 8. (all the memories on that album)
Thanks to Spotify's amazing recommendation AI, forward 2024, I bumped into his 2md album (which I had no idea about), and the opening track is hypnotizing.
4. Shabaka - Insecurities ft. Moses Sumney
A 2024 track with Shabaka Hutchings' solo album.
He's one of the most prominent British jazzmen of the last decade, playing saxophone in Sons of Kemet & The Comet is Coming.
His first solo record is mesmerizing, elegant, and delicate, like this track featuring another black jazzman songwriter, Moses Sumney.
5. The Velvet Underground - Venus in Fur
A little classic to finish this week's playlist.
I won't make the offence to introduce you to the band. Enjoy and see you next week.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
