Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 3, Episode 9.
Another recurrent contributor for this week, my friend M. from Scandiavia who sent us a Winter Solstice selection last year in the midst of a freezing cold winter.
He’s back today for the first week of March with a more swinging edition for longer days.
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
The Groovy edition
With Winter yielding the way to Spring, time to shake things off a bit, including whichever part of your body you feel like swinging...
1. Black Sabbath - Lord of this World
Past the cool intro, you'll stumble on THE definition of a groovy riff, enhanced even more by an incredibly catchy vocal line by Ozzy Osbourne!
This avant-garde riff from the earlier 70s will give birth to a multitude of heavy metal genres in the coming decades.
Legendary!
Smoking a HUGE joint is optional.
2. Toe - Metronome
An amazing Japanese Math/Post/Prog Rock band we've discovered by chance with a friend!
We were in a shop and heard a tune playing in the speakers and looked at each other in awe... (one of the rare times we both used Shazam!)
After a long acoustic intro (be patient! :-)), the drums will make you definitely want to move some body part of yours.
Counting the beats is optional.
3. Lazerhawk - Distress Signal
Our young American Synthwave master delivering an incredibly groovy tune!
With a typical sound from the 80s, this track gets even better at around the 2min mark with one of the best bass lines of all time.
And when those keyboards pads enter right after, everything will make sense. You'll know when you hear it.
Wearing a pair of Wayfarer is optional.
4. Sleep Token - Aqua Regia
Even though I understand this band being criticized (especially by Metalheads), one cannot deny the silky-smooth groovy atmosphere of this song.
The beat, the nice piano and keyboard pads create a great foundation on which Vessel's flow is masterfully laid on.
If it had been released by any random non-rock affiliated artist, the effects on the voice would have not posed any problem to anyone. This gives some perspective.
Lighting a cigar in a Piano-Bar is optional.
5. The Night Flight Orchestra - Internal Affairs
A nice Swedish band from the nearby city of Helsingborg. TNFO is a side-project band which doesn't take itself too seriously but still produces high quality music.
A funky keyboard, an effective guitar and a voice full of honey will prove once more how Sweden is a chorus-factory :-D
Special mention to the singer who goes out of his comfort zone which is initially Death Metal.
Singing in your shower is optional.
5+1. BONUS: Bloodbath - Soul Evisceration
Once again I allow myself to cheat by adding a Metal song bonus, but Master Thomas already showed the way.
Okay... if you ever survive the ultimate violence of the first 20 seconds, you'll start to notice that one could actually dance to Death Metal!
Yes, you read correctly! Try to feel the drums groove once they kick in at around 22-23 sec and no one will blame you if you start shaking your butt 🤣
A masterpiece (those riffs...).
Laughing satanically is optional.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
