This Week's Playlist #112 - The Reggae edition with Jeni L.
5 reggae / rocksteady picks for this week
Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 3, Episode 8.
Another week and another dive (after hip-hop) into a genre I'm unfamiliar with (reggae and rocksteady) with Jeni.
Thank you, Jeni, for the picks, and see you all next week!
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
Guest feature: Jeni L.
This is my choice; it's almost Impossible for me to choose just 5 songs. Just 5! From one genre! But which one?!
My starting point was a reggae disco at Walthamstow's Trades Hall, almost a proper working men's club with members' drink prices and a lovely cross section of humans all dancing to a mix of rocksteady, lovers' rock and classic reggae. Plus I just really love reggae and dub.
I've picked quite a few from the Studio One label; I visited Studio One in Kingston a few years ago, and it's the equivalent of Sun Studio in Memphis, worth a pilgrimage to.
Here are my choices, in no order of preference. I'm not going to chat; I'm just going to spin the records.
1. Message from a Blackman -
2. The Maytals - 54 - 56 Was My Number
3. Lone Ranger - Badder Dan Dem
4. Norma Fraser - The first Cut is the Deepest
5. Alton Ellis - Rocksteady
There are so many, and they're all Good! And I could go on selecting and bore everyone to death!
And I haven't picked anything by Ken Boothe, Lee Perry, The Melodians, or Augustus Pablo... Time to stop!
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
