This Week's Playlist #111 - The Couples edition.
5 songs from bands who were or are still a couple
Hello everyone!
This Week's Playlist - Season 3, Episode 7.
We recently celebrated a secular celebration of Love which tooks its origins in the feast day of St. Valentine, a Christian martyr who lived in ancient Rome.
So I thought I would pick up 5 songs from “bands in relationships” with musicians being in a band and in (or at some point in the past) a relationship.
TL;DR: I'm running a musical newsletter with a new guest sharing 5 songs each week.
There is a YouTube link for each of the songs on the cover, and here are the playlists for each streaming platform:
1. No Doubt - Sunday Morning
No Doubt formed in 1986 (with Gwen Stefani as a back vocalist before she took the lead singer position). Gwen Stefani and Toni Kanal (bass player) in a seven year relationship, which ended just before the release of their breakout album “Tragic Kingdom”. The break up inspired their main hit - “Don’t Speak” and this song, “Sunday Morning”.
2. The Do - Gonna Be Sick
The french pop duo met when they were both working on a movie soundtrack abnd separated just before starting to work on their 3rd album.
This song is from their sophomore album “Both Ways Open Jaws“, and you should also check their live performance which were a level higher of intensity.
3. Within Temptation - Mother Earth
Sharon den Adel and Robert Westerholt started Within Temptation in 1996 and and got married (and are still) in 1998
I’m less familiar with the band most recent repertoire but I’ve listened a lot to their “Mother Earth” album when I was younger.
4. The Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
Smashing Pumpkins’ James Iha (guitar) and D’Arcy Wretzky (bass) dated for the first four years of the band's inception, from 1988 to 1992.
5. Sonic Youth - Teen Age Riot
Kim Gordon and Thurston Moor founded the NY noise-rock powerhouse and released 15 albums during about 3 decades.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
