This Week's Playlist #39 - The trumpet edition
Week #39 - The Trumpet edition
TL;DR: I'm running a weekly newsletter with 5 songs and a short description, and a matching Spotify playlist if you want to subscribe.
For the non-Spotify readers, there is a Youtube link for each of the songs on the cover.
Week 39.
Another playlist I had in mind for a while focused on the trumpet, an instrument I used to play as a teenager/student. I even played in a ska band when I was a student (which is when I discovered some of the tunes below). Crazy memories.
Here is a selection of great tunes with trumpets for this week.
I'll start with the 90s alternative rock classic from Cake. Very recognizable with John McCrea's flow. He's half singing, half spoken word.
Robert Wyatt - Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road
I had to dig for this one. Always heard of Robert Wyatt (my friend David is a huge fan) but never really took the time to listen to him. He's one of the pioneers of the UK jazz/psychedelic/prog scene in the 70s.
This song is one of the masterpieces of his Rock Bottom album, the first one he composed after an accident that made him paraplegic.
Another 90s alternative band this week, playing a fusion of ska, punk, funk, metal, reggae, and soul. This one is from their breakthrough album, "Give a Monkey a Brain and He'll Swear He's the Center of the Universe".
I had to put on a song by Nils Peter Molvaer, one of the most prominent current jazz trumpet players, pioneering the fusion with electronic music.
A whole brass band to finish this week, with Goran Bregovic and the opening track of this iconic soundtrack of Underground, Emir Kusturica's most intense movie .
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
