This Week's Playlist #18 - The Lebanese edition (with correct links)
Week #18 - The Lebanese edition
Update: Resending this week's newsletter with correct link for Slave To Sirens :-)
TL;DR: I'm running a weekly newsletter with 5 songs and a short description of it, and a matching Spotify playlist if you want to subscribe.
For the non-Spotify readers, there is a Youtube link for each of the songs on the cover.
Hello everyone!
Happy week 18 :-)
This week's focus is on Lebanon, my native country, which has been facing a crippling crisis for 2 and a half years. In addition, general elections are coming next week (and this Sunday for expatriates. It will be my first time voting as a Lebanese citizen).
Here are 5 Lebanese artists for this week's playlist.
Bachar Mar-Khalife - Ya Nas: A multi-instrumentalist, pianist, singer, percussionist, and son of Lebanese greatest oud player who brings a burning fusion of traditional Arab music with electronic beats
Soap Kills - Enta Fen: One of the very first indie bands to emerge in the Middle East, Soapkills was founded at the end of the '90s. They drew their inspiration from Arab music (both classical and folk) and from electronic music, dub and trip-hop. The group's sound features contemporary, personal interpretations of classic Arab songs.
Ibrahim Maalouf Beirut: The iconic song of one of the most prominent Lebanese jazz trumpet players.
Slave to Sirens - Salome: The trailblazer all-women metal band defies all the stereotypes of heavy metal and the Middle East spheres. Their new single is just out.
Mashrou3 Leila - Abdo: Born out of a late night / early morning jam session at the American University of Beirut, Mashrou' Leila (whose name roughly translates to Overnight Project) plays an indie folk-rock with songs about political freedoms, LGBT rights, race, religion and modern Arabic identity.
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
