Week #13 - The Number of the Beast edition
TL;DR: I'm running a weekly newsletter with 5 songs and a short description of it, and a matching Spotify playlist if you want to subscribe.
For the non-Spotify readers, there is a Youtube link for each of the songs on the cover.
Hello everyone!
Week 13.
Happy 1st of April! Under snow for those in France / UK, hopefully, warmer for the rest of you :-)
Another week and another homage to one of my favourite bands, whose one of its iconic albums turned 40 last month.
Iron Maiden released The Number Of The Beast in March 1982, and Metal Hammer published an excellent article on how this album changed the face of Heavy Metal. I'll spare you how I discovered the band (the first heavy metal album I listened to in my life was Powerslave).
I might focus on Iron Maiden in a future episode, but for today, I thought it would be fun to pick up a playlist with songs about hell or Satan or the devil :-)
Beck - Devils Haircut: The opening track and instant hit of Odelay, the album which definitely put the genre-hopping maverick on the map of hip music on both sides of the Atlantic. Devils Haircut is a typical Beck song blending in a single track folk, blues, hip hop flow lyrics and weird sample sounds.
Full album: Odelay (1996)
Billie Eilish - All the good girls go to hell: Controversial pick for this one :-). I've always enjoyed Billie's (and her brother Finneas) music. I really like their very fresh sound and unconventional approach to composing their music, which is so far away from the mainstream bullshit she got thrown into. I listened a lot to this album when it went out 3 years ago.
Full album: WHEN WE ALL FALL ALSEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?(2019)
Rodrigo & Gabriela - Diablo Rojo: Mexico's mighty acoustic guitar duo is playing a massively heavy-metal influenced flamenco. This is the main hit from their breakthrough album in 2008.
Full album: Rodrigo y Gabriela (2008)
JC Satan - No Brain No Damage: I had to pick a band with Satan as their name. JC Satan is coming from the French garage rock DIY scene with a really fresh and hypnotic (may I say) sound. For those who love O Sees, Queen of the Stone Age, and the Pixies.
Full album: Centaur Desire (2018)
Nick Cave - Up Jumped the Devil: I had to dig that one from one of his darkest albums, written around the height of his heroin addiction. It's the first album with the typical Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' recognizable sound. This song has pounding piano stabs and a hazy bass which matches our satanic theme of the week :-)
Full Album: Tender Prey (1988)
Until the next time, Godspeed!
Thomas
